North America's biggest distillery — and Canadian whisky's anchor

Hiram Walker, a Detroit grocer, crossed the river in 1858, built a distillery on the Windsor shore and then built a town around it — Walkerville, with its own churches, schools and streetcars. His 'Club' whisky was so popular in American saloons that US distillers lobbied to force the word 'Canada' onto its label; the badge of shame became the brand, and Canadian Club was born. Today the vast riverside plant is the largest beverage-alcohol distillery in North America, home to Canadian Club, J.P. Wiser's and the rye that quietly wins awards under the Lot No. 40 name.
